Maynilad Water Services, Inc., the largest private water concessionaire in the Philippines in terms of customer base, has committed over PHP 3 Billion (USD 52.8 million) to upgrade 17 of its 22 existing Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs) within the next five years. This initiative is geared toward bolstering the nutrient-removal capabilities of these STPs in adherence to the revised effluent standards (DAO 2021-19) outlined by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR).
Maynilad’s flagship Parañaque Water Reclamation Facility, known for its substantial volume output, already complies with the DAO 2021-19 standards. The company’s commitment extends to ensuring that all 22 existing wastewater treatment plants in the West Zone, boasting a collective daily treatment capacity of approximately 684,707 cubic meters of wastewater, will be upgraded to meet DAO 2021-19 standards by 2027. Furthermore, any future STPs established by Maynilad will incorporate these advanced nutrient-removal processes into their treatment capacity designs.
This upgrade project constitutes a crucial aspect of Maynilad’s extensive PHP 178 billion (USD 3.9 billion) wastewater management plan, spanning from 2023 to 2046. The overarching goal of this initiative is to expand sewer coverage, effectively manage pollution levels in bodies of water, and make a substantial contribution to the ongoing rehabilitation of Manila Bay. The program encompasses various key components, including the construction of 18 new STPs in different regions within the West concession, as well as the installation of approximately 360 kilometers of new sewer lines, designed to efficiently transport used water from households to STPs, among other wastewater-related endeavors. As the largest private water concessionaire in the Philippines, Maynilad’s investment underscores its unwavering commitment to environmental sustainability and the region’s long-term well-being.
