San Miguel to Commence Operation of Battery Energy Storage Facilities in 2022

February 2022

SMC Global Power Holdings Corp., the energy arm of San Miguel Corporation, has announced that a total of 690 MW of its 1,000-MW Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) facilities nationwide would be operational in early 2022. By end of 2022, it expects to complete all 31 facilities for a total of 1,000 MW in capacity. The company is investing over USD 1 billion to simultaneously build 31 BESS facilities nationwide. More significantly, the project will allow for the integration of over 3,000 MW of intermittent renewable power sources into the grid.

In terms of geographic distribution, 18 out of the 31 BESS projects with a combined capacity of 720 MW are in Luzon, 8 with a capacity of 190 MW are in the Visayas, and 5 facilities with a capacity of 90 MW are in Mindanao.

For this project, SMC Global Power awarded the contract to global technology company ABB, energy sector manufacturer from Finland Wärtsilä, and US-based energy storage technology and services provider Fluence.

The BESS facilities are intended to augment the RE portfolio of SMC Global Power, which includes the construction of solar, liquified natural gas, and hydroelectric power plants to address the continuing need of the Philippines for reliable and affordable power supply.
