Singapore and Rotterdam Collaborate to Develop a Sustainable and Digitalized Shipping Industry

September 2022

The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) and the Dutch Port of Rotterdam have signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to develop a sustainable and digitalized shipping industry jointly.

Both the cities are together aiming to clean up the common shipping route by 2027. At a media conference, the 2 port authorities mentioned that they would begin pilots and trials for digitalization, besides the usage of low and 0 carbon fuels on the 15,000km route.

On the sustainability front, the cities are working to move away from marine gasoline oil and low-sulfur gasoline oil to sustainable alternate options such as biofuels and biogas.

As for digitalization, the two cities plan on sharing experiences, digital paperwork, and requirements to facilitate the motion of vessels and cargo, making the arrival of vessels at the respective ports seamless.
