Singapore Expands Newater Capacity to Meet Growing Water Demand

October 2024

Singapore is increasing its Newater production capacity by 50 million gallons per day with the planned expansion of the Tuas Newater Factory. Announced by the national water agency PUB, this expansion will boost the factory’s daily output from an initial 25 million gallons to 75 million gallons. As Singapore anticipates a near-doubling of water demand by 2065, the Tuas Newater Factory will play a key role in meeting these future needs, alongside other sources like desalination plants, imported water from Malaysia, and local catchments.

The Tuas Newater Factory will be integrated with the Tuas Water Reclamation Plant, which is under construction and scheduled to become operational in 2026. The additional capacity of 75 million gallons a day, equivalent to around 136 Olympic-size swimming pools, represents a significant boost to Singapore’s water self-sufficiency. This facility is part of a broader strategy to transition to an advanced used-water management system using the Deep Tunnel Sewerage System (DTSS), a comprehensive 206 km network that channels used water to reclamation plants across Singapore.

In line with these developments, Singapore is restructuring its Newater facilities. Eventually, the country’s five Newater plants will consolidate into three primary locations: Changi, the upcoming Tuas plant, and a redeveloped Kranji facility projected for completion by 2035. The Bedok Newater Factory, Singapore’s first such facility, was recently closed after reaching the end of its operational lifespan, marking a shift to newer infrastructure and continuing Singapore’s efforts to maintain water resilience in the face of rising demand and climate-related challenges.
