Thailand to Construct New Deep Seaport in Rayong

June 2021

In June 2021, the Industrial Estate Authority of Thailand (IEAT) announced its intention to commence the construction of the third phase of Map Ta Phut deep seaport in Rayong.
The current facilities in the port have reached their full potential. Therefore, IEAT has pressed for the construction of the new port. The new port development requires reclamation covering 1.6 square kilometers. The third phase of development will require a total investment of USD 1.7 billion. The expansion of the port is expected to be completed in 2024.
The expansion will help expand imports of raw materials for the petrochemical industry and bio-economy. It will also accommodate the growing volume of liquefied natural gas. Significantly, in February 2021 Thai conglomerate  PTT Global Chemical PCL awarded a contract to a subsidiary of Samsung Engineering for an approved project to expand the use of propane as a feedstock at PTT’s existing olefins operations at Map Ta Phut Industrial Estate.
This project is one of five infrastructure development projects under the Eastern Economic Corridor scheme, which also include the development of another seaport in Laem Chabang (with a required investment of USD 3.5 billion), as well as a high-speed railway linking three airports (requiring an investment of USD 6.8 billion).
