American IT company Equinix, Inc. and Indonesian conglomerate PT Astra International Tbk (Astra) have announced a joint venture to develop Indonesia’s digital infrastructure. The joint venture will be established with Equinix holding a 75% equity stake and Astra holding a 25% stake. The collaboration aims to support the digital transformation of multinational corporations and local businesses in Indonesia.
By leveraging Equinix’s global digital infrastructure expertise and Astra’s vast experience in the Indonesian market, this joint venture aims to empower both local businesses and multinational corporations to enhance their digital capabilities and leverage emerging technologies. These technologies include hybrid multi-cloud, 5G, Internet of Things (IoT), artificial intelligence (AI), and other cutting-edge advancements.
Through this collaboration, the joint venture will initially focus on establishing and managing a data center called JK1 in the central area of Jakarta. Subsequent expansions are also planned across Indonesia. Scheduled for completion by the second half of 2024, the eight-story JK1 data center will offer over 1,600 cabinets and more than 5,300 square meters of colocation space upon its full construction.
Astra’s entry into the digital infrastructure industry takes a new direction with its collaboration with Equinix. While Astra previously centered its efforts on internal startup development, startup acquisitions, and direct or venture capital-based equity investments, this partnership represents a significant shift in focus. By joining forces with Equinix, Astra ventures into the realm of digital infrastructure, broadening its scope and exploring new opportunities in the rapidly evolving digital landscape.
