Malaysia to Introduce Cyber Security Bill to Address Digital Threats

July 2023

The Malaysian government has announced that the nation’s first Cyber Security Bill will be developed and introduced by the National Cyber Security Committee in 2023. The cyber security law is anticipated to enable improved enforcement and monitoring of cyber security issues in Malaysia by closing loopholes and removing duplication in legal provisions.

According to Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, the nation is currently facing significant challenges in the digital age that require the government’s highest level of preparedness in addressing cyber security threats. To tackle these challenges, the National Cyber Security Agency (NACSA) has been entrusted with the responsibility of leading efforts across different government bodies. The proposed bill aims to grant legal authority to NACSA, empowering them to oversee and enforce cybersecurity-related regulations in Malaysia.

The Cyber Security Bill will also guide local firms in identifying their cyber security requirements and gaps through guidelines and standards which should be adopted globally. For instance, the Bill may request mandatory certification of digital products to ensure that the products have cyber security features as per internationally recognized standards.
