Vietnam and US Collaborating for Satellite Observations on Environmental Changes

February 2020

US space agency National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) is collaborating with the Vietnam National Space Centre (VNSC) for satellite observations on land use and land cover. The observations are providing researchers with important data on environmental changes and the effects of agriculture and the health of forests and wetlands.

The information is expected to help generate insights and contribute to solving critical issues being faced in urban areas like Ho Chi Minh City, rural areas in the Mekong Delta and also in many parts of the US, such as rapid urbanization, air pollution, land subsidence, flooding, forest depletion, and water contamination. The data will help to enact effective policies for protecting the Environment.

Speaking at an event on using satellite technology organized by NASA, the US’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, the HCMC University of Technology, and VNSC, the US consul general said, “Understanding those changes is essential to protecting our Environment and enacting effective policies to address and mitigate the effects of a natural world that is changing before our very eyes.”
