Vietnam to Launch Its First Mega LNG Complex

October 2023

Petrovietnam Gas Joint Stock Corporation (PV GAS) has completed a series of technical tests and is now prepared to begin commercial operation of the Thi Vai liquefied natural gas (LNG) warehouse and terminal complex, making it the first mega LNG infrastructure in Vietnam.

The construction of Thi Vai LNG warehouse and terminal project started in October 2019, located in the southern province of Ba Ria–Vung Tau. Their trial operations began on July 10, 2023, and the test run of the main processes was completed on July 30.

Currently, Thi Vai system is the largest LNG complex in Vietnam, serving not only the southern region but also the whole country. The LNG warehouse, the core element of the system, already had its first phase completed with a storage capacity of 180,000 cu.m., handling up to 1 million tons of LNG per year. Its second phase is currently under construction with the target to increase the annual handling capacity to 3 million tons. Meanwhile, the LNG terminal is capable of serving vessels with a deadweight tonnage (DWT) of up to 100,000.

This LNG complex will become a crucial connection in the provision of deliquefied LNG and ensure the uninterrupted supply of gas for current clients and upcoming power plants under the general plan on developing Vietnam’s gas industry until 2025 with orientations toward 2035. It is predicted to supply around 1.4 billion cub.m. for customers and partially compensate for domestic gas shortage after 2023.
