Vinamilk Investing in Hi-Tech Dairy Farms in Laos

September 2020

Vietnamese dairy giant Vinamilk has announced plans to increase its investment in Lao-Jagro, its Laotian subsidiary, by USD 41 million. The funds will be used to complete a hi-tech organic dairy farm in the northern province of Xiangkhouang with 4,000 cows and also for the development of a second high-yield hi-tech dairy farm of 4,000 cows.

According to Vinamilk, the location has ideal conditions for dairy farming thanks to its similarities to the low hills of New Zealand. These farms are part of a planned complex of high-tech dairy farm projects in Laos, the development of which is in line with Vinamilk’s strategy to develop fresh raw milk sources at home and also overseas.

The project is supposed to e completed in two phases, with a total investment of USD 500 million. In the first phase, the complex will have 24,000 cows on an area of 5,000 hectares. The size of the herd will be raised to 100,000 in the second phase.

Lao-Jagro was established in 2015 with Vinamilk holding a 51% stake and Laotian and Japanese investors the remaining share.
