AWS Plans to Invest Over USD 8.5 billion in Singapore for Cloud Technology and AI

June 2024

Amazon Web Services (AWS) recently announced plans to invest an additional SGD 12 billion (USD 8.86 billion) in its existing cloud infrastructure in Singapore from 2024 to 2028 to meet the rising customer demand for cloud technology and services. AWS has already invested SGD 11.5 billion (USD 8.49 billion) in the AWS Asia Pacific (Singapore) Region through 2023. With this new investment, AWS’s total planned investment will double to more than SGD 23 billion  (USD 17 billion) by 2028.

According to a new AWS Economic Impact Study (EIS), this new investment is estimated to support an average of 12,300 full-time equivalent (FTE) jobs in local businesses each year. These positions, including roles in construction, facility maintenance, engineering, and telecommunications, are part of the AWS data center supply chain in Singapore. Thousands of active customers in Singapore, such as Grab, the Maritime & Port Authority of Singapore, Singlife, and Synapxe, use the AWS Asia Pacific (Singapore) Region to drive their digital transformation.

AWS is doubling down on its cloud infrastructure investments in Singapore from 2024 to 2028 to support customer demand and reinforce Singapore’s status as a regional innovation hub and global leader in digital competitiveness. This investment will spur economic growth and cloud adoption while also contributing to the local economy through workforce upskilling, renewable energy projects, and community impact.

AWS will support Singapore’s Smart Nation and National AI Strategy 2.0 (NAIS 2.0) with its new flagship AI program, AWS AI Spring for Singapore. This program involves a multifaceted collaboration with the Singapore Government, public sector organizations, and enterprises to accelerate the adoption of AI and generative AI in Singapore.

Besides, AWS will collaborate closely with Singapore Government agencies to enable and accelerate AI adoption within the public sector and broader industries. This is expected to upskill employees to be ready for a future driven by generative AI.
