Thailand’s B.Grimm Power has successfully imported its first liquefied natural gas (LNG) cargo, amounting to 65,000 tonnes, becoming the first private company in the country to do so. The announcement was made on August 26 via LinkedIn. The imported LNG will be distributed to small power producers (SPP), with the initial supply allocated to 10 of B.Grimm’s combined cycle co-generation power plants. The LNG cargo was received at the state-owned PTT’s LNG terminal in Map Ta Phut.
B.Grimm Power, a subsidiary of BGRIM, emphasized that this achievement aligns with the government’s natural gas liberalization policy. This policy aims to reduce electricity generation costs in the private sector. The company’s entry into the LNG market marks a significant step in the ongoing efforts to diversify the country’s energy supply and promote competition.
B.Grimm established an LNG joint venture with PTT in 2021, following its authorization by the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) in 2020 as one of seven LNG importers, effectively ending PTT’s monopoly on LNG imports. Initially, B.Grimm was permitted to import 650,000 tonnes of LNG annually to supply power plants under the SPP scheme. In June 2022, B.Grimm LNG received an additional license to import 550,000 tonnes per year to supply 18 BGRIM-owned power plants.
This development highlights B.Grimm’s growing role in Thailand’s energy sector and supports the broader goals of reducing energy costs and enhancing the efficiency of electricity generation within the country.
