Indonesia to Add 9 Million Digital Talents by 2030, Creating Opportunities for Private Players

March 2022

Indonesia will need at least nine million digital talents by 2030, according to the Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs.

The country’s digital economy currently accounts for 40% of the ASEAN digital economy, with a value of USD 70 billion, projected to more than double to USD 146 billion by 2025. The government aims to support this growth by fostering digital talents in Indonesia, offering scholarships for professional workers, and a digital leadership academy for managers. It is also encouraging the digitization of micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs).

Private players have identified business opportunities in this area too, and are offering innovative solutions while launching new initiatives. An illustrative example is represented by global tech firm Sea, which recently launched Sea Labs Indonesia, dedicated to fostering the country’s digital talents. Located in Jakarta, the laboratory aims to build a team of 1,000 digital talents, mainly engineers and product managers, by 2023.

Sea Labs Indonesia provides a training program for new and established digital talents. New digital talents can join in a 6-month training program covering tech and engineering fundamentals, among others. Established digital talents will go through on-the-job training with projects to promote teamwork and learn best practices from Sea’s engineers.
