Indonesian to Establish Center for Laptop Production

August 2021

The Indonesian Ministry of Industry has announced plans to create an Engineering Center for laptop production, in order to build a market for domestically produced laptops and invite investment in related industries. Among the main Engineering Center’s goals are to protect Intellectual Property (IP) and support laptops’ main components. It might also potentially assist with the development of the semiconductor industry.
Currently, with the support from the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research and Technology (Kemendikbudristek), Indonesia has the capability to assemble 300 – 400 thousand units of laptops. If the number rose to 1-2 million laptops, the nation could nudge Original Design Manufacturers (ODM) to take part in enhancing the laptop ecosystem.
There is a regulation underway detailing the procedure for the calculation of local content requirements (TKDN) for laptop production. TKDN is geared towards supporting the ‘Proud of Made-in-Indonesia’ program and more electronic components to be manufactured domestically.
In order to encourage investment and produce more electronic components domestically, a production line is required as part of the TKDN assessment.
