JICA to Conduct Survey for Pre-feasibility Report of Port Project in Danang

June 2020

The Japan International Co-operation Agency (JICA) plans to begin a survey for the pre-feasibility report of the Lien Chieu port construction project later this year. The survey project will use JPY 50 million (USD 468,000), from the non-refundable Official Development Assistance (ODA) of the Japanese Government. It is part of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between JICA and the city’s Planning and Investment Department on the data building and survey for the development of the port.

In 2018, the government of Vietnam made decision on the investment and construction of the Lien Chieu port by the Danang city administration. The city’s Tien Sa port is overloaded with cruise and cargo ships. Following construction of the Lien Chieu port, Tien Sa port will be used only for cruise ships, while Lien Chieu port will handle cargo ships and be a main logistics center for the north-south railway and road systems and the East-West Economic Corridor (EWEC) that links Laos, Myanmar, Thailand and Vietnam. The government for the port to be operational by 2022.

JICA will also help propose a master plan on development of the port system and surrounding zones in 2025-40. The construction of the port is likely to be implemented under the Public-Private-Partnership (PPP) model.

The first stage of construction of the port, which is estimated to cost VND 7.37 trillion (USD 326 million) will focus on infrastructure, including piers, dykes, storage and transshipment services for handling 3.5 to five million tons of cargo from 2022 onwards. It could allow access to cargo ships of up to 100,000 deadweight tonnage (DWT) and container ships with loading capacities from 6,000 to 8,000 twenty-foot equivalent unit (TEUs) as well as 10,000 DTW liquid cargo vessels.

Currently, the city’s seaport system handles 12 million tons of cargo annually and it aims to handle 29 million tons by 2030.
