Jurong Island to be Developed into a Sustainable Energy and Chemicals Park

January 2022

Jurong Island is set to become a sustainable Energy and Chemicals Park. In November 2021, the Economic Development Board (EDB) released its “Sustainable Jurong Island” report, which details the government’s aspirations, targets and plans to transform the island into a sustainable Energy and Chemicals Park that operates sustainably and exports sustainable products globally. This vision was first outlined in the Green Economy Pillar of the Singapore Green Plan 2030, the nation’s six-point plan towards sustainability for the long term.

The plan involves increasing the output of sustainable products such as bio-based fuels and chemicals, as well as boosting sustainable production to reduce carbon emissions and pollution.

Minister for Trade and Industry Gan Kim Yong, announced the Sustainable Jurong Island plan at the opening ceremony of a Shell plant on Pulau Bukom. The Shell plant – the first project on the Jurong Island which is in line with the island’s sustainability ambitions – will turn hard-to-recycle plastic waste into an oil used as a feedstock for petrochemicals.
