Singapore Attracts Investments from Both Google and Tencent

September 2022

In August, Google and Tencent, a China-based multinational technology company, announced the completion of their respective investments in Singapore. Google announced the completion of its third data center in Singapore. In contrast, Tencent announced the agreement of a strategic collaboration with Singapore-based Acclivis Technologies and Solutions (Acclivis), a technology services provider in APAC, to bring private, public, and hybrid cloud and ICT solutions to enterprises in Southeast Asia, China, and Hong Kong.

Google opened its first Singapore office in 2007 with 24 people and has grown to over 3,000 local staff. With the opening of its third data center, Google has invested over USD 850 million into the city-state, which includes the building of infrastructure such as subsea cables connecting Singapore to the US and beyond. Additionally, Google has announced that they plan to deepen collaboration with Singapore, conducting activities such as training 50,000 parents and children in online safety to an artificial intelligence partnership with the government.

Meanwhile, Tencent’s collaboration with Acclivis is expected to tap into the company’s presence in Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, the Philippines, and Hong Kong, as well as Tencent Cloud’s expertise and experience in China. This would prime both parties as the go-to for Southeast Asia entering China or vice-versa, as the platform will offer Tencent Cloud’s high-quality, high-performance cloud computing services and industry solutions. Additionally, the collaboration is expected to provide a one-stop ICT platform featuring internet services, managed services, and IT end-user support provided by Acclivis to assist an enterprise’s digital transformation.
