Kosy Group Kickstarts USD 345 Million Wind Power Plant in Bac Lieu

October 2020

The Vietnamese Kosy Group, which operates in urban development and renewable energy, recently launched the first phase of the Kosy Bac Lieu onshore wind project, located in the Mekong Delta.

The USD 345 million project involves building 45 wind turbines on a 14-hectare site with a capacity of more than 200 MW. With nine wind turbines, the first phase is set to join the national grid system by October 30, 2021, using the wind turbine equipment of Goldwind International Holdings (HK), which applies direct drive technology with a permanent magnet without a gearbox. This technology will lower operating costs, increase power generation efficiency, and reduce operational maintenance risks.

Kosy Bac Lieu is the first wind power project for the Kosy Group. Speaking at the ground-breaking ceremony, Chairman of Bac Lieu People’s Committee, Duong Thanh Trung, said the project is in line with Vietnam’s Master Power Development Plan VII and Bac Lieu’s socio-economic growth orientations.

Vietnam has given licenses for power plants with a total capacity of nearly 80 GW to be built in the next decade, including 30 GW generated from wind and solar power. Among them are

  • The Lac Hoa and Hoa Dong wind power plants in Soc Trang province, worth USD 86.1 million, invested by Lac Hoa and Hoa Dong Wind Power Companies; and
  • Two other wind power plants in Gia Lai province, worth USD 155 million, developed by a joint venture between Chu Prong Gia Lai wind power company and Chu Prong Gia Lai wind energy company.
