In support of Malaysia’s decarbonization efforts, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob has unveiled the electric vehicle (EV) infrastructure development guidelines under the Electricity Supply Act 1990 (Act 447). The guidelines aim to provide a legal, regulatory framework for the user safety of EV charging infrastructure. It is expected to be enforced in the fourth quarter of 2022 (4Q22).
Ismail further highlighted that Malaysia’s sole utility provider, Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB), in collaboration with Mysuri Biz Technologies Sdn Bhd, a local tech firm, will provide 1,000 units of EV taxis. He said that the involvement of government-linked companies (GLCs) such as TNB needs to be intensified to support the development of the country’s EV industry.
Concerning this, the Energy Commission (EC) of Malaysia, which regulates the industry, has developed the Guide on Electric Vehicle Charging System (EVCS) to serve as a manual for all competent persons, electrical contractors, and consulting engineers involved in the electrical installation of EVCS. The Guide sets minimum requirements for an EVCS’ design, installation, inspection, testing, supervision, operation, and maintenance.
