PBBM Signs Self-Reliant Defense Posture (SRDP) Revitalization Act

November 2024

President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. (PBBM) has signed the Self-Reliant Defense Posture (SRDP) Revitalization Act, which aims to foster a robust and sustainable domestic defense industry, reducing reliance on foreign military equipment and technology.

The SRDP law prioritizes research and development, enabling the country to develop cutting-edge defense systems tailored to its specific needs. The SRDP law is also expected to have a positive impact on the Philippine economy, creating jobs and stimulating economic growth.

The country seeks to enhance its ability to respond to evolving security threats, particularly asymmetric threats that may not be effectively addressed by traditional military hardware. Once the SRDP is enacted into law, the Department of National Defense (DND) pointed out that only essential, modern military technologies will be prioritized. For example, the need for durability or toughness in shipbuilding will be DND’s priority under SRDP.

The signing of the SRDP comes at a time of increasing geopolitical tensions and security challenges in the region. The Philippines’ commitment to self-reliance in defense is a strategic move that will ensure the country’s security and sovereignty for generations to come. With collaboration between the government, private sector, and academic institutions, the nation aims to leverage local expertise and resources to develop its own world-class defense industry.
