Thailand Increases 2022 Budget by 20% for Digital Projects

January 2022

The government of Thailand has just allocated THB 2.4 billion (USD 72 million) in fiscal 2022 for the implementation of six digital projects under the Thailand Digital Government Development Plan (2023-27). This represents an increase of one-fifth compared to the figure set in 2021.

According to the president and chief executive of Thailand’s Digital Government Development Agency (DGA), the six projects include the use of the One identification program. This initiative is managed by the Office of SMEs Promotion, and its goal is to strengthen small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), supporting 3 million of them to access government e-services and promoted government projects.

A second project relates to a welfare platform that is meant to allow users access information about state welfare programs, while a third initiative focuses on digital transcripts. Over 20 universities have joined the digital transcript project, which will be developed further to allow students to pay tuition fees online and link with overseas universities. Moreover, the Thai Bankers’ Association, the Federation of Thai Industries and the Thai Chamber of Commerce, have agreed to support members using digital transcripts for job applications.

The fourth initiative will involve the use of data development for the agricultural sector, helping to harvest information about farming, while the fifth project is a law portal to facilitate public participation and complaint procedures for the public. The sixth project involves health and medical services, with the DGA planning to develop applications to reduce the risk of Covid-19 infections, alongside digital health certificates.
