Vopak Singapore to Expand Ammonia Infrastructure for Low-Carbon Power and Bunker Fuel

November 2022

Vopak Singapore, a joint venture between renewable energy company Royal Vopak and the Port of Singapore Authority Corporation, announced in late October 2022 that it is looking to expand its ammonia storage infrastructure, located at its Vopak Banyan Terminal, an integrated oil, chemical and gas hybrid storage terminal. The terminal, located on Jurong Island, has a current storage capacity of about 1.5 million cubic meters (cbm), inclusive of a 10,000 cbm refrigerated ammonia storage tank that is primarily used to support petrolchemical activities in Singapore.

The new expansion is expected to allow for new storage capacity, primarily to support the power and maritime sectors in areas such as low-carbon power generation and bunker fuels. This move comes as Singapore seeks to assess the viability of ammonia to develop regulations and an ecosystem to support it, both as a hydrogen carrier and a direct fuel source. Such an expansion would also help to contribute to Singapore’s goal to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2050, with low-carbon hydrogen supplying up to half of the country’s energy needs.
