Hong Seng Consolidated, Eocell to Set Up Regional EV Battery Production Plant in Malaysia

July 2022

Malaysia’s leading equipment manufacturer, Hong Seng Consolidated, (HSC) and California-based battery developer, EoCell have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to create a regional manufacturing hub in Malaysia to produce batteries for electric vehicles (EVs) and energy storage solutions (ESS). EoCell engineers have significantly contributed to the design and manufacturing of plug-in hybrid EVs (PHEV) and EV batteries for major automakers such as BMW, VW, Audi, Porsche, and Daimler.

According to the MoU, HSC will find suitable sites for the regional manufacturing hub, propose qualified consultants to perform the necessary studies, and liaise with the government to obtain incentives and required authorizations. On the other hand, EoCell will provide licenses of battery and manufacturing technologies for EV batteries, relevant industry and technology knowledge for the implementation of the project as well as expertise in battery production line design and installation. The partners also plan to establish a new joint venture company.

EoCell primarily concentrates on the design and development of high-energy nano-silicon anode materials and non-flammable electron technologies for next-generation silicon and solid-state battery technology. It was stated that with the partnership, Hong Seng is positioned to emerge as one of Southeast Asia’s major battery producers, focusing on sustainable production facilities with clean green energy. It will further develop its first-generation best-in-class battery for the EV market in line with the current electrification in Southeast Asia.
