Indonesia’s Food Delivery Market Ranks First in the Region

February 2021

In 2020, Indonesia’s food delivery service accounted for USD 3.7 billion in Gross Merchandise Value (GMV), making it the largest market in the region. Overall, the region’s GMV registered a 183% increase from previous year and exceeding the 91% growth rate from 2018 – 2019. Despite stern competitions, Grab contributed nearly half of the region’s GMV, followed by Foodpanda, Gojek, Deliveroo, LineMan and Now.
The rise of food delivery is driven by the Covid-19 pandemic as Indonesians experience series of lockdown that restrict mobility and food establishment’s occupancy and operational hours. Indonesian customers have now access to more than 20 million food and beverage items.
To solidify its position, Grab continues to push for innovation in the food business and recently announced a new partnership with Yummy Corp, a cloud kitchen startup. Merchants on Yummy will be integrated into Grab’s ecosystem. Besides Grab, other e-commerce players, such as Tokopedia and Sea Group’s Shopee have put up ready-to-eat food and beverage items on their platforms, although they depend on Grab and Gojek for last-mile delivery.
