Malaysia Expands Solar, Biomass, Biogas & Hydro to Achieve 40% Renewable Energy By 2035

August 2022

Malaysian Energy and Natural Resources Ministry (KeTSA) has targeted Malaysia to be equipped with 40% renewable energy (RE) by 2035. KETSA’s Deputy Minister Datuk Ali Biju stated that the RE installation in the country had reached 23% as of July 2022, during the 2nd Annual Clean Power and New Energy Forum.

Ali Biju asserted that the Malaysia Renewable Energy Roadmap (MyRER) document served as a blueprint for Malaysia’s transformation to a low carbon energy system. The roadmap strategy, among others, concentrates on expanding four major RE resources of solar, biomass, biogas, and hydro in a balanced yet sustainable approach within Malaysia’s electricity supply system. The clean energy transition is projected to create an overall direct investment of MYR 53 billion (USD 12 billion) while creating 47,000 job opportunities and 60% carbon intensity reduction in 2035.

One of the leading solar players in Malaysia, Solarvest has been working with local property and land development firms to construct RE facilities. Solarvest was appointed as the engineering, procurement, construction, and commissioning (EPCC) solutions provider for MK Land Holdings Bhd to develop a 10.95-megawatt (MW) large-scale solar photovoltaic (PV) plant in Kerian, Perak state. The solar PV plant is part of the Energy Commission’s large-scale solar (LSS4) program. In addition, Solarvest and CT Land Sdn Bhd signed an agreement to jointly build 1,000 units of solar-ready factories and warehouses at Selangor Smart Industrial Park. The 2-year project includes the provision of decarbonization service to NCT Land’s local facilities using solar and bioenergy, hydrogen, energy efficiency, and electric mobility.
