Memorandum of Understanding to Decarbonize Indonesia

March 2022

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. (MHI) has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Indonesia’s Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB) for the purpose of conducting joint research on clean energy solutions, aiming to enable the country in its decarbonization plans and processes.

This joint research includes activities such as feasibility studies, investigations, validations and R&D for technologies that will support the energy transition of Indonesia. The MOU, which will be valid for the period of five years, will lead to building a joint R&D center in Indonesia. This new MOU will help Indonesia in its plans to decarbonize its energy sector through its commitments to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 29% until 2030 and achieve 23% renewable energy use by 2025.

The earlier MOU, which was signed in 2020 between MHI and ITB, led to joint feasibility studies on emerging energy sources including hydrogen and ammonia, as well as air quality control systems (AQCS) and microgrid solutions. MHI and ITB also collaborated on training Indonesian engineers through conducting joint courses on topics such as big data analysis, biomass, integrated coal gasification combined cycle, hydrogen and AQCS.
