The inauguration of Sarawak Petchem Sdn Bhd’s USD 1.5 billion (MYR 7 billion) methanol complex represents a pivotal development for Malaysia, enhancing its status as a leading methanol producer in the Asia-Pacific (APAC) region. Located in Tanjung Kidurong, Bintulu, the new complex is expected to attract additional investments and stimulate the production of related downstream products.
This major project aligns with Malaysia’s strategic objectives outlined in the Chemical Industry Roadmap (CIR) 2030 and the New Industrial Master Plan (NIMP) 2030. It aims to advance the country’s capabilities in the chemical sector, diversify into higher value-added products, and drive economic growth. With a production capacity of 1.75 million tons annually, the complex solidifies Sarawak Petchem’s position as Malaysia’s second-largest methanol producer, following Petronas Chemicals Group Bhd. The complex is integral to the Sarawak state government’s initiative to establish Bintulu as a prominent petrochemical hub.
Malaysia’s petrochemical industry, encompassing over 100 companies, is supported by growing foreign investments fueled by its oil and gas resources, extensive infrastructure, strong services sector, and strategic location serving key markets in Asia and the Middle East. While current production focuses on olefins, polymers, and aromatics, Malaysia is set on advancing into more sophisticated specialty chemicals, moving beyond basic commodities.
