Thailand Establishes Alliance to Develop Energy Storage Technologies for EVs

October 2020

The National Science and Technology Development Agency (NSTDA) (an agency under the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation), Khon Kaen University (KKU), King Mongkut’s University of Technology Thonburi, and King Mongkut’s University of Technology North Bangkok, in collaboration with Electric Vehicle Association of Thailand have signed a memorandum of understanding launching the Thailand Energy Storage Technology Alliance (TESTA).

The alliance is expected to help strengthen and drive the domestic development of energy storage technology both in academia and industry. TESTA will serve as the platform to exchange ideas on energy storage with Thai stakeholders and international partners.

Energy storage systems, according to the Chairman of the Commission and Energy Commission, will play a vital role in propelling the transition in energy and industrial sectors within the country, especially in next-generation transport systems. Thailand has a goal to be the regional hub of electric vehicle (EV) manufacturing by 2025, and targets to produce 750,000 EVs within 2030. The alliance is expected to further increase collaborations between industry and research centers to create an ecosystem for clean energy and EV industries.
