US Company Introduces 10-Minute Charging Stations for Retrofitted Electric Motorcycles in Indonesia

November 2024

Graphion Energy Solutions USA has announced the upcoming launch of a retrofitting operation and a network of 10-minute charging stations for electric motorcycles in Indonesia. This initiative aims to convert gasoline-powered motorcycles into electric models, furthering Graphion’s commitment to promoting sustainable transportation and reducing carbon emissions across the ASEAN region.

The retrofitting service will provide a range of conversion options, with prices ranging from USD 680 to USD 950. With a government subsidy of USD 450, the conversion cost becomes more affordable for motorcycle owners, allowing for a transition to electric mobility for as low as USD 230.

Additionally, Graphion plans to set up cost-effective 10-minute rapid charging stations, greatly enhancing convenience and accessibility for electric motorcycle users. This initiative aims to alleviate concerns about range anxiety and encourage more riders to transition to electric vehicles.

Recent reports reveal that Indonesia’s electric motorcycle subsidy program did not meet its target, distributing only 11,532 units in 2023, far below the intended 200,000 units, despite a budget allocation of around IDR 1.4 trillion (USD 5 million). The Industry Minister identified limited battery capacity and long charging times as major obstacles to adoption, stressing the need for fast charging technology and standardized battery systems to ensure the success of electric vehicles.

Graphion is confident its innovative rapid charging battery system can address the challenges facing electric motorcycle adoption in Indonesia. The company aims to drive greater adoption of electric motorcycles by offering a quick and efficient charging solution. Additionally, Graphion acknowledges the difficulties faced by battery swapping services, as evidenced by the largest operator, Gogoro, which reported a loss of USD 79 million in 2023. Despite running 12,000 stations, Gogoro has struggled with profitability over the past 11 years, encountering theft, fire risks, and high operational costs. Graphion believes that its rapid charging approach provides a more financially viable and sustainable alternative for riders.

The PR Manager of Graphion Energy Solutions USA stated that the company’s mission is to spearhead the shift towards sustainable transportation. He further emphasized that by launching retrofitting operations and offering rapid chargers, Graphion is aiding the transition to electric vehicles and contributing to a greener future for Indonesia and the wider region.
