Vietnam’s New Law on Environmental Protection Creates Market Opportunities

April 2022

The 2020 Law on Environmental Protection entered into effect in January 2022, institutionalizing new policies related to environmental protection. It gradually harmonizes Vietnam’s regulations with international laws. Importantly, for the first time, it defines a residential community as a stakeholder in environmental protection, and comprises rules for the control of projects with a high risk of adverse environmental impacts; post-inspection for projects using advanced and environmentally friendly technologies; cuts administrative procedures, and promotes waste separation at source.

Vietnamese localities are currently introducing solutions to protect the environment. For instance, most industrial parks in the southern province of Binh Duong have invested in building separate rainwater and wastewater drainage networks with a total investment of over 2 trillion VND (USD 87 million). Notably, a wastewater treatment plant with a daily capacity of 6000 cubic meters has also been built at the Vietnam Singapore Industrial Park II (VSIP II). Binh Duong also plans to invest in an automatic air quality monitoring system with forecasting models, compiling pollution maps for localities with high urbanization rates. The locality aims at developing a warning system for air quality.

Similarly, the northern province of Phu Tho is inspecting businesses and manufacturing facilities in order to guide them in installing automatic environmental monitoring stations.
