Chevron and Pertamina Sign MOU for Lower Carbon Power Resources

Chevron New Ventures Pte. Ltd. (Chevron) on behalf of Chevron Corporation and Indonesian state-owned company, PT Pertamina, have signed an agreement on new lower-carbon energy for Indonesia.

The Indonesian government’s agenda behind the partnership is to support and create net-zero emission by 2060. Pertamina is committed to increasing its renewable energy mix from 9.2 percent in 2019 to 17.7 percent in 2030. The potential resources discussed between the two parties were novel geothermal technologies, carbon offsets through nature-based solutions; carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS); as well as lower carbon hydrogen development, production, storage, and transport.

Since 1974, Indonesia’s geothermal capacity keeps developing. Pertamina through their Subholding Power and NRE has a current total geothermal capacity of 1,877 MW. The company also diversifies geothermal development. They are developing a green hydrogen pilot project in Ulubelu Area. The area’s target is to produce 100 kg per day and brines to power is developed in Lahendong Area to produce 200 MW originating from several areas.
