The Land Transport Authority (LTA) of Singapore has awarded an SGD 242 million (USD 180 million) civil contract to the joint venture of Nishimatsu Construction Co., Ltd. and Okumura Corporation Singapore Branch for the design and construction of tunnels between the West Coast station (CR18) and Jurong Lake District station (CR19) as part of the Cross Island Line (CRL) Phase 2.
This project will involve the construction of twin bored tunnels, each extending 2.4 kilometers and reaching depths of up to 40 meters beneath critical infrastructure. The construction work, set to begin in the fourth quarter of 2024, will focus on ensuring ground stability and safe construction through real-time monitoring and safety measures. The joint venture partners bring significant experience in tunneling, having previously worked on other major projects such as the Circle Line 6 and the Thomson-East Coast Line.
The CRL, Singapore’s eighth MRT line, will enhance connectivity across the eastern, north-eastern, and western corridors, linking major hubs like Jurong Lake District, Punggol Digital District, and the Changi region. The fully underground line will be constructed in three phases, with Phase 1 expected to be completed by 2030 and Phase 2, comprising six underground stations, slated to begin passenger service by 2032. Engineering studies for Phase 3 are ongoing.
