Vietnam to Build National Water Resource Monitoring System by 2030

April 2021

Vietnam has approved the master scheme on basic investigation on water resources through 2030 with a vision to 2050. In this context, the government plans to build a national water resource monitoring system and for the forecast of flooding, droughts, saltwater intrusions, and rising sea water levels within the next decade.
The system is expected to monitor and coordinate the operation of all reservoirs in 11 river basins. It will also monitor the exploitation, the use of water and discharge of wastewater into water bodies. According to the World Bank, rapid increases in water demand would put 11 out of 16 river basins in Vietnam under water stress by 2030, particularly during the dry season. By that year, the country aims to have completed the investigation and assessment of underground water supplies, explored underground water sources, and identified and the areas where underground water extraction is to be limited.
Besides effort to monitor wastewater, Vietnam is striving to reduce plastic waste and marine litter. The government recently announced that it aims to enhancing plastic packaging collection, sorting and recycling, encouraging fishermen to collect plastic waste caught while fishing, establishing an alliance of supermarkets to reduce the use of single-use plastic bags, and managing waste in ports. Pilot projects have been announced in Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi and Phu Yen province.
